Postojna Cave, the most popular attraction in Slovenia

In search of the best spots to visit worldwide, we’ve stumbled upon Postojna Cave, the most popular attraction in Slovenia.

Ljubljana, the capital city of the country, with its tales of dragons, is not the only internationally acclaimed tourist attraction in Slovenia. A network of 20 kilometers of exciting galleries, passageways and hidden chambers, Postojna is the most visited cave in Europe. Created by the waters of the River Pivka, the cave was first mentioned by an explorer in the 17th century and opened to the public in 1819. Later on, in 1884, the cave was electrified, even before Ljubljana. And before that, in the 1870s, there was a rail that already functioned to carry the visitors along the galleries. Even today, the exciting tour of the Postojna Cave starts by hopping on the train. The railway will lead you slowly through the wondrous world of speleothems, stalactites and stalagmites in the most outlandish forms and sizes.

The guided tour, which is available in 15 languages, lasts about an hour and a half. Among the things you will encounter, be sure not to miss the large collection of cave animals.

Regardless of the weather, the temperature inside the cave is a constant 10 degrees Celsius. You might need to take a coat with you, but on the other hand, you won’t freeze in winter.

Postojna is the largest Classic Karst cave and, with a legacy of over 35 million tourists who have crossed its threshold, the most visited on the European continent. This makes for an unforgettable travel experience in a truly unique adventure.

If you want to cultivate your newfound passion for speleology, you can rent a car in Ljubljana and stop by the Pivka and Crna caves nearby. Though smaller, they shouldn’t be neglected either, so you won’t regret your choice!
