Top Europe travel destinations for 2013 (part 2)

We’re supposed to be talking about top Europe travel destinations for 2013 and last time we only talked about one place, so today we’re going to have to do a bit better than that and talk about a few more destinations that the old continent has up its sleeve for your holiday.

There’s that saying about ‘what’s old is new again’ and that is in full effect in the Danube-straddling Budapest, capital of Hungary.

For those holidaymakers interested in experiencing a new type of bar, then Budapest has the perfect new thing for you, like the ruin pubs – romkocsma – and garden bars – kertek. These are very popular and trendy watering holes in old, atmospheric and un-renovated buildings with wild plant-scapes.

You can stay in retro chic historic hotels, like the minister’s residence – Brody House – or the one-time aristocrat’s palace Hotel Palazzo Zichy.

The city has been well-known for a long time for its many thermal baths, and the 16th century Turkish-era Racz Baths will be reaopening in 2013 after a period of being refurbished as part of the luxurious Racz Hotel.

So we’ve been to pubs and places to sleep, and you can continue with the retro-hip vibe with getting some food at old-fashioned coffee shops and rustic etkezdek – basically mom-and-pop canteens which serve simple Hungarian dishes.

Northern Iceland

A bit on the cold front, this destination is great for a change of pace and temperature during the scorching summer months on continental Europe. The country and island of Iceland has been increasing popular with word-of-mouth spreading about its window of affordability, popular Icelandinc bands and great hot springs.

While most of the focus is set on the capital, Reykjavik and the Golden Circle, you shouldn’t ignore the country’s second largest city, Akureyri nor the wild and chilly charms of Northern Iceland.

With no shortage of dramatic vistas featuring geysers and lava fields alongside towering waterfalls, it’s a wonderfully unique place to see.
