Top Greek destinations

Today, there are relatively few Europeans (among those who travel, that is) who have never spent at least one seaside vacation in Greece. This amazing country, the cradle of European civilization, has it all: the setting, the history, the beauty, the art of making tourism, so being here will always feel like a good choice. Here are what we believe to be the top Greek destinations that should make your list, especially if you are looking for a vacation that is both unforgettable and low cost:

Skiathos Island, with its calm and beautiful scenery, colorful harbor and white sand beaches, is a perfect destination if you are looking for something more cosmopolitan. It is a bit more costly than destinations like Paralia-Katerini for instance, but the difference is visible. There is a Pine Beach, where you can feel both the scent of pine trees and that of the salty water of the sea. Lodging here can be a bit expensive, but the scenes are amazing, reminding of the more elitist Capri Island in Italy. Skiathos is also the setting of the Meryl Streep Hollywood movie “Mamma Mia”.

Crete Island is “a country in itself”, some would say. Heraklion is the most famous region. It is a place with an active nightlife, but at day you can also enjoy the cultural delights of visits to museums, medieval castles and traditional villages. You will probably want to have as much mobility as possible, so it is advisable to rent a car in Heraklion.

Athens, the capital city of Greece, is a place that requires no introduction. Completely transformed after the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, Athens now benefits from a newer, more accessible infrastructure, as well as a good polish. Here, you can see history come to life at the Temple of Olympian Zeus and in the Museum of Archeology. But really, even walking down the streets will give you a feel of the life of the place and the people. Athens car rental is also an option you should consider, especially since the city is huge and you will want to enjoy it to the full.
