The three wonders from Ponta Delgada

The three wonders from Ponta Delgada

Also known as the “Green Island”, Sao Miguel, part of the Azores Archipelago, is famous for its crater lakes, volcanoes, natural hot springs and rugged coastline, as well as the wild surrounding nature and incredible landscapes.
One of the largest divisions from Sao Miguel, extending from the center of the island to the western coast is the Municipality of Ponta Delgada, bordered on the northeast by Ribeira Grande and on the southeast by Lagoa.
Ponta Delgada is home to a number of eco-attractions like Furnas with its natural hot springs, the nature reservation of Lagoa do Fogo—where volcanic landscapes and beautiful beaches vie for attention—and the crater lakes of Sete Cidades National Park.

Hidden in the centre of Miguel island, Lagoa de Fogo or “Lake of Fire” is a blue crater lake which rests in the central caldera of the Água de Pau Massif, the youngest volcano on the island. Its remote setting makes this impressive volcanic crater especially appealing to outdoor enthusiasts due to the moderately difficult 14-kilometer uphill walk that starts from Ribeira da Praia on the south coast and ends overlooking the crater’s rim. The Lake of Fire represents a protected nature reservation and the crater’s walls are covered with a multitude of endemic plant species. You can easily spend an entire day here, admiring the beauties of this marvellous place and indulging yourself with an invigorating mineral bath while exploring Caldeira Grande.

Another amazing location is the spectacular volcanic crater lake of Lagoa das Sete Cidades. The name Sete Cidades is said to have originated from the 7 craters on the island which resulted from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and which gave birth to the Verde, Azul, Rasa, Santiago, Caldeiras Secas and Alferes lakes that now exist in the area. Considered one of the great natural wonders of the Azores archipelago, the mesmerizing 7 cities lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Azores and in fact consists of two lagoons: Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul. Their names mean green and blue, which are the primary colors you will see during your tour to Sete Cidades. Emerald green rolling hills and lush vegetation frames both lakes and the cliffs drop 500 meters into the deep clear blue waters, transforming this corner of paradise in the ideal place to spend amazing unforgettable moments.

When you get to to Furnas Valley, you get the feeling of arriving to a unique place. A beautiful hybrid of lush New Zealand with rough Iceland in the middle of the Atlantic. Furnas Valley is the center of Sao Miguel’s unique geothermal activity. The entire Furnas valley is a giant volcanic crater which last erupted in 1630. The volcano is now dormant, but it can be admired through its thermal pools, steam holes, and hot springs.
In the 18th century, the water system of Furnas Valley started to become popular due to the medicinal properties of its mineral water, used to treat rheumatism and various skin conditions and tourists who visit this place make sure they get to enjoy all its marvels. Visitors can also enjoy several hiking trails around the lake, as well as several beautiful parks and the iconic Neo-Gothic Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias.
