Stay in a traditional hacienda in Merida

Merida has been the de facto cultural capital of the entire Yucatan peninsula ever since the Spanish conquest. The town is both provincial and cosmopolitan at the same time thanks to its narrow streets which burst with colonial history as well as its broad central plazas and great museums.

Merida can be your Yucatan headquarters from which to mount adventures into the surrounding landscape. The town boasts affordable food, great accommodation options and also many places where you can spend the night away with some great entertainment.

Since you’re here to experience something of the old colonial world of Merida then what better place to spend your nights in a traditional hacienda in merida.

The Hacienda Misne for instance is located just outside of Merida and is a historic building dating from the 18th century.

Just 15 minutes drive from downtown Merida you go past a century old oaken door into a unique combination of colonial times and French influenced architecture. The main house has been beautifully restored and the walls which encircle the property also protect its lush tropical gardens.

As far as what you can see in Merida while you’re staying at the Misne hacienda, there are quite a few just within the town’s limits, for instance the Catedral de San Ildefonso.

The hulking cathedral is built on the site of a former Maya temple, and it has been standing since the end of the 16th century, 1598 to be more exact. Some stone from the original Maya temple was used in its construction.

There are lots of places to eat around the town and one of the most popular ones with both tourists and locals alike is the La Chaya Maya restaurant. A new location for the restaurant was opened in a lovely downtown colonial building so consider this as a great introduction to classic yucateco cuisine.
