Salzburg trip

The central Austrian city of Salzburg is world-known to fans of musicals for being the place that ‘The Sound of Music‘ was filmed, and once you see it, even know, you’ll find it hard not to start bursting into song when u see the almost fairy-tale setting.

Salzburg is one of the largest cities in the country, and its ‘old town’ area is known for its wonderfully preserved Baroque architecture – it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things to do in Salzburg – Austria

There are so many things to see and do in Salzburg, it is quite impossible to talk about all of them in such a short article, we’ll just have to mention a few of the major ones, for instance the Schloss Hellbrunn.

This used to be the summer palace of the Archbishops of Salzburg, and it features a lot of cleverly designed fountains and rather large gardens. This is a great place to visit if you’re traveling with children, however children of all ages will have a lot of fun here.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is situated on top of a mountain and offers some wonderful views of the surrounding mountain ranges and of the city. The Fortress now acts as a museum of medieval weapons, as well as life in medieval times, including torture instruments.

Then there’s the Alter Markt Square which features a variety of shops, old shops that have survived largely unchanged for many years.

One cannot visit Salzburg without seeing Mozart’s birth house, it’s quite worth a quick visit.

The city is also home to a casino as well as, for the chess enthusiast, there’s a giant chessboard painted onto the ground – you can find it past the cathedral, you’ll have to wait your turn, but there’s something inherently fun about playing on a huge chessboard.

The best way of seeing Salzburg is on foot, of course there are other options, but the idea behind seeing it on foot is that you’ll get a much better idea of what the city is like, is atmosphere resides in its wonderful architecture, old buildings and side-streets, things that you can only truly enjoy by navigating the city on foot.
