5 places you mustn’t miss in the Czech Republic

Perhaps the best example of successful transition from communism to capitalism, the Czech Republic combines the melancholy of the Central and Eastern Europe with the riches of the West. Today we walk through 5 places you mustn’t miss in the Czech Republic.

The country’s capital city, Prague, has an Old Town Square (also known as Staromak) that has been one of the most beautiful and prosperous European urban spheres ever since the 10th century. The center of the Square is marked by the 1915 statue of Jan Hus and the older 17th century Plague Column.

If you want to take a stroll through the Garden of Europe, the Lednice-Valtice Complex is the place for you, with its spectacular castle and unique park abounding in rich vegetation, rare trees and dainty romantic buildings. Naturally, Lednice-Valtice is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Another site rightfully included in the UNESCO list is Cesky Krumlov, dominated by the majestic site of the Renaissance chateau which towers over the amazing medieval little town.

The Sedlec Ossuary is an unforgettable place, but be warned that it’s not for those feeble of heart. The immense bone church was built in the late 19th century compiling the remains of some 40.000 people. There are garlands made of skulls from the ceiling all around the huge bone chandelier and four pyramids of different human bones adorn the corners of the church, as the altar is also covered in bones, crucifixes and chalices.

Karlstejn Castle is quite possibly the most popular Prague day trip, a visit to this lovely medieval castle just 30 km away from the capital city. Karlstejn was built in the 1300s and hosted the Holy Roman Emperor’s crown jewels before being abandoned for centuries, until the late 19th century, when it was restored.

The most comfortable way of transport in the Czech Republic is Prague airport transfers.
